How to choose cheer team colors that stand out on the mat
How to choose cheer uniform colors: working with school colors, contrast rules for rhinestones, the pros and cons of white uniforms, and color tips for gymnastics leotards.

Key takeaways
- Start from your school or gym colors, then add one strong neutral (black, white or silver) for contrast.
- Contrast is everything: rhinestones the same color as the fabric disappear from the judges' table.
- Avoid a single color head to toe. Blocks of a second color give the uniform shape from a distance.
- White uniforms reward sharp technique, but they also show every mistake and every stain.
Your uniform colors are part of your team identity: they are on the mat, in every photo and on every bow. But a combination that looks great on a sample can disappear under arena lights. Here is how to choose cheer team colors that read clearly from the stands and the judges' table.
Start with what you already have
School teams usually start from the school colors. All-star gyms usually start from the gym's brand colors. Either way, you will normally work with:
- One main color that covers most of the uniform
- One accent color for trims, panels and lettering
- One neutral (black, white, silver or gold) to add contrast and make the other colors pop
If your school colors are close to each other, for example navy and black or red and maroon, a neutral becomes essential. Without it, the two colors blend into one dark shape at a distance.
The contrast rule
A common complaint from cheer fans and coaches is that a uniform which looked stunning up close lost all of its detail on the mat. The usual reasons:
- Same-color rhinestones on same-color fabric. Red stones on red fabric look rich in your hand but are invisible beyond a few meters. Use clear, silver or a contrasting color for stones on logos and lettering.
- One color head to toe. An all-red or all-blue uniform can wash athletes out. Blocks of a second color across the chest, sleeves or skirt give the uniform shape and show body lines.
- Low-contrast lettering. Your team name should be readable in a photo taken from the back of the arena. Outline it or set it on a contrasting panel.
White uniforms: high reward, high risk
White and light uniforms are popular because they look clean and energetic, and they make sharp, synchronized motions stand out. The flip side: they make every timing mistake just as visible, and they show stains and dye transfer quickly. If you choose white, add a darker accent color to frame the body, and follow a strict washing routine (see our guide on how to wash a cheer uniform).
Lights, cameras and fabric
- Metallic and holographic fabrics change color under arena lights and camera flash. Ask for a photo of the fabric under bright light before approving.
- Dark colors such as navy, black and maroon can look almost the same under stage lighting. Add silver, white or a bright accent.
- Screen colors are not fabric colors. Approve colors from a fabric sample or a reference such as a Pantone code where possible.
Popular combinations and how they read
| Combination | On the mat | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Black + pink + silver | Bold, high contrast, very popular in all-star cheer | Use silver or clear stones on the black areas |
| Navy + white + silver | Clean and classic for school teams | Keep enough white so the navy does not read as black under lights |
| Red + black + white | Strong and energetic | Break up the red with black or white blocks to avoid an all-red look |
| Royal blue + white | Bright, easy to read from a distance | Add a darker trim to frame the body |
| Purple + teal + black | Distinctive, stands out among more common colors | Check both colors under bright light; some purples turn blue |
Matching the whole look
The uniform is only one part of what the judges and the crowd see. Bows, practice wear, warm-ups and even backpacks should use the same color references. Small differences, like a slightly different pink on the bow, are very visible in team photos. When you order different items at different times, keep a record of the exact color codes and fabric references from the first order.
Colors for gyms with several teams
All-star gyms with several teams often keep the same colors across all levels and change the design or the amount of decoration from team to team. Others give each level its own accent color within the gym palette. Either works; what matters is that the gym logo and main color stay consistent, so every team is recognizable as part of the same program.
Colors for gymnastics leotards
The same principles apply to gymnastics and rhythmic leotards, with one difference: a leotard is seen as one continuous line. Gradients, a contrasting sleeve or a diagonal panel help show body shape, and crystal layouts should follow the line of the body rather than sit in one block. Our gymnastics leotards and leotard design concepts show how color blocking and crystal placement work together.
Practical checklist before you approve colors
- Look at the design at thumbnail size on a phone: can you still read the team name?
- Check the lettering and logo stones against the fabric behind them.
- Make sure practice wear, warm-ups and bows use the same color references as the uniform.
- Confirm colors in writing with your supplier before production starts.

FAQ
How many colors should a cheer uniform have?
Usually two team colors plus one neutral such as black, white, silver or gold. More colors can work, but contrast matters more than the number of colors.
Are white cheer uniforms a good idea?
They look clean and highlight sharp motions, but they also show mistakes and stains clearly. Add a darker accent color and plan a careful washing routine.
What color rhinestones should I use?
Choose stones that contrast with the fabric behind them, such as clear or silver stones on dark fabric. Same-color stones disappear at a distance.
